The Bible instructs us to walk with God, as stated in Amos 3:3, which asks, “Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” (verse 3 NLT).

To “walk together” implies moving in harmony, much like a tandem bicycle where both riders must pedal in sync. Imagine if the front rider is pedalling forward while the one at the back hits the brakes – it’s clear that such a lack of coordination would hinder progress. The idea is that both need to get into harmony. The analogy extends to two people in a canoe. Both people need to move together. To move efficiently, they must paddle in perfect rhythm. That is what it means to walk with God.

As followers of Christ, we need to get into harmony with God. This doesn’t imply that God needs to adjust to our plans; quite the opposite. Often, we mistakenly expect God to bless plans we’ve crafted independently of Him. True harmony with God means we don’t inform Him of our plans for His blessing but rather we get into the habit of praying, so as to involve God in what we plan to do, and then ask Him to take the front paddle as we get in rhythm with Him.

Proverbs 16:3 supports this idea: “Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], and your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance].

Aligning ourselves with God’s plans for us, His children, is at the heart of walking with God. It means seeking to understand and embrace the divine purpose He has uniquely designed for each of us. That’s what it means to walk with God.
