As South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day on March 21st, it’s an opportunity for us as Salvationists to reflect deeply on how faith and justice intersect. In a country with a history marked by struggles for equality and dignity, the words of the prophet Micah are especially meaningful: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
This verse summarises the essence of human rights for a child of God – to act justly, to extend mercy and to live humbly in communion with God. For South Africa, a country that has undergone significant socio-political transformation, these principles hold immense relevance. As Christians, we are called not only to adopt these principles in our personal lives but also to advocate for them in society. Our faith compels us to be champions of justice, to stand up against oppression and to defend the rights of the marginalized and vulnerable. In doing so, we mirror the compassion and justice personified by Jesus.
The journey towards upholding human rights in South Africa is ongoing. While significant progress has been made since the dark days of apartheid, challenges remain. Economic inequality, numerous tensions and various other struggles continue to plague our nation. As agents of change, we are called to confront these issues with courage and conviction, guided by the principles of justice and mercy found in God’s Word.
Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of both the strides we’ve made and the work that still lies ahead. It’s a day to celebrate the victories of the past, remember the sacrifices of those who fought for justice, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for human dignity and equality.
In light of what Micah 6:8 says, let us strive to act justly in all our dealings, to extend mercy to those in need and to walk humbly with our God. As we do this, may our lives be a billboard displaying the power of love, justice and compassion. As we observe Human Rights Day, let us pray for a South Africa where justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream (Amos 5:24). May we, as Salvationists, play our part in building a country where all are treated with dignity, equality and respect – a nation that reflects the values of the Kingdom of God right here on earth.
