This must have been an incredibly emotional time for our Lord Jesus Christ. None of His disciples fully understood what was really happening or what was to follow. As Jesus knelt to wash their feet, they could only perceive the act with earthly eyes, marvelling at the humility of their Teacher doing what they never thought possible.

In this Scripture, Jesus was modelling what we, as today leaders ought to emulate. Jesus wasn’t just performing a menial task; He was modelling the essence of true leadership—a leadership rooted in service. “If you can’t serve, you can’t be a leader,” Jesus seemed to convey, knowing that this lesson would leave an indelible mark on His disciples’ hearts. Jesus knew the impending days of His departure were fast approaching and His Father’s mission was soon to be accomplished.

As the disciples gathered around the table probably set as usual with all the delicacies of the day, perhaps there was some unspoken hierarchy in their seating arrangement, in accordance with Jewish custom. Yet to Jesus, that was immaterial as they all ranked the same through the eyes of His heavenly Father.

The act of washing their feet was strategic in a sense that it was a sermon in itself. Jesus was silently communicating, “As my time among you draws to a close, I leave you with hearts spiritually cleansed, ready to carry forth the message of hope and healing wherever you go.” However, the disciples’ initial reluctance to accept this gesture revealed their lack of understanding. They had yet to grasp the spiritual significance of the supper and the act of footwashing.

As we reflect on this passage, let’s consider our own attitude towards serving others. Are we motivated by a genuine desire to emulate Christ’s love and humility, or are we seeking self-glorification? Let’s strive to serve with hearts surrendered to Christ, recognizing that true leadership begins with a servant’s heart.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How conscious are we of a desire to serve others with love and humility at this time?
  2. Are we serving for Christ’s sake or self-glorification?
